Practical standards and calculation methods
“Large food producers are increasingly asking farmers and growers about sustainability on the farm”, explains Ruud Tijssens, Agrifirm's Director of Corporate Affairs. “When it comes to the carbon footprint of both plant and animal products, sustainable growers and livestock farmers are expected to monitor their performance using robust calculation methods. However, there are various methods for collecting the right data and our customers are asking Agrifirm questions about this subject.” SAI Platform develops globally applicable standards and calculation methods for collecting qualitative information about sustainability. Agrifirm endorses the importance of this and wishes to use its knowledge of farms to pursue practical, applicable methods.
Links in the food chain
SAI Platform sees the Agrifirm membership as a major step. Peter Erik Ywema, Director of SAI Platform: “Agrifirm's presence as a practical link to agriculture is important. SAI Platform is seeing rapid membership growth and recognition of the resources it has developed, but it is a challenge to enter farmyards with the information, resources and desired developments. I also hope to meet the Agrifirm farmers and thus add more links to the chain.
