Earth observation satellites allow for detailed, large-scale mapping of agricultural activities. This includes the distribution and condition of crops, the identification of planting and harvesting dates as well as food security early warning activities.Availability of adequate Earth observation data is also critical in establishing national forest mapping systems or in supporting sustainable aquaculture.

The Munich-based geo-data portal CloudEO provides a unique platform to create and market commercial geo-services. As part of the annual Earth monitoring competition Copernicus Masters, CloudEO invites developers and GEO-enthusiasts to submit exciting and promising business ideas in agriculture and forestry.

The proposed services need not, but can make use of the unique data, software, and infrastructure environment CloudEO provides. The platform will grant efficient access to all types of satellite, aerial, and weather data (including from Sentinel satellites) and a powerful development and processing environment.

To market their services, participants can use the CloudEO store, which is capable of handling everything from customer registration and verification to invoicing. Participants will also have access to commercial means of distribution such as Google Maps Engine (including the corresponding API) and other leading tools.

The winner will be rewarded with a EUR 3,000 cash prize, six months of access to a free standard workbench for development and production on CloudEO, marketing support through the web store, and active business support. In addition the winner qualifies for the overall prize of the Copernicus Masters competition – a cash prize of EUR 20,000 along with a satellite data package worth an additional EUR 60,000 (provided with financial support of the European Commission).

In 2014, for the first time, the Copernicus Masters is carried out on a worldwide basis. Geared primarily toward start-ups and other companies, researchers, and students, the competition will require entrants to submit their applications from 15 April to 13 July 2014 at www.copernicus-masters.com.
