EU policy on bioenergy – share your views!

Agro Napló
Bioenergy is derived from organic material – or biomass – including wood, agricultural crops and organic waste. In 2012, biomass and waste accounted for about two-thirds of all renewable energy consumption in the EU. Bioenergy is chiefly used for heating, followed by electricity generation and transport fuels.

The European Commission is seeking your views on an EU policy for sustainable bioenergy from 2020 to 2030. The move is part of the EU's climate and energy targets for 2030 – including cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 2005, improving energy efficiency by at least 27% and increasing the share of renewable energy to at least a 27% in overall energy consumption.

In its communication on climate and energy policies from 2020 to 2030, the Commission announced that it will present an improved EU policy for sustainable bioenergy for the period after 2020, as part of the revision of the renewable energy directive due by the end of 2016. This should help the EU's energy system to become more competitive, secure and sustainable.

The consultation runs from 10 February 2016 to 10 May 2016.
