Diarrhea causes substantial problems in calf rearing. Cryptosporidia by now forms the biggest part of the pathogens that cause diarrhea, along with E.coli, rota- and corona viruses. They are very resistant and extremely hard to contain. Once a farm has been infected, even the best colostrum management and hygiene are not enough to combat the parasites. To guarantee safe rearing, even under high infection pressure, it is reasonable to support the calves' intestinal health right from the start.
During a practical test on a dairy farm in the northern part of Germany that has been tested positive for cryptosporidia, two groups of calves were raised parallel to each other. The test group received the combination product BEWI-SAN Prevent C at a dosage of 10g per liter milk from their second meal until the age of 14 days. The control group obtained veterinary treatment in the same period.
Over all 40 calves were tested using BEWI-SAN Prevent C. During the whole testing period the calves showed strong growth and none of them suffered from diarrhea. Even after changing to milk replacer, no infection-related diarrhea occurred. “The calves that received BEWI-SAN Prevent C were very agile and showed pleasure in drinking. From now on we are going to use BEWI-SAN Prevent C for all of our calves right after their birth” concluded the farm manager.
The dietary supplement BEWI-SAN Prevent C has the following properties:
- By adding organic acids the intestinal activity is being supported and the colostrum stabilized for at least 12 hours
- Lactic acid bacteria protect the intestinal mucosa and promote the natural gut flora
- Beta-carotene as provitamin A benefits the calf's immune system
- The optimal combination of all existential vitamins and trace elements prevents deficiency symptoms
- Palatable and appetizing flavours (plant extracts) guarantee a good food intake
