Used machinery market trends in focus at Agritechnica 2017

While agricultural machinery dealers have traditionally needed to know their regional market inside-out, and have rarely had to search outside this area when evaluating the machines they have on offer, the rise of websites and email mean that enquiries about good-quality, used farm equipment can now come from export buyers anywhere in the world.

This means that used machinery values are increasingly subject to a wide range of external factors, including some that are politically motivated, as well as those determined by the manufacturer or national governments. For any prospective machinery deal, the value of the used piece of machinery intended for replacement plays a fundamental part in the decision process both for the farmer and the dealer, so it is vital that the dealer remains well informed.

This means it is important to be able to access regular in-depth market surveys to monitor the trends and economic implications these may have, and a visit to the Information Centre for the Used Machinery Trade, in Hall 2 at Agritechnica 2017, will allow dealers to find out about recent advances in making machinery values more transparent.

„The information centre on second-hand machiney includes over 60 companies, that are either trading in seond-hand machinery or provide services for second-hand machinery.

“From logistics to custom handling and financing, we have gathered second-hand machinery expertise in one spot at Agritechnica,” says Heinzbert Mies, project manager of the Used-Machinery Center.

In the past, trends in the international second-hand market have been somewhat obscured and a complete overview of the prices commanded by different brands, power brackets and age has been complex to establish, but publishers like Lectura, a leading provider of data, reviews and statistics about machinery, have specialized in supplying information for used equipment specialists.

Shortly before the last Agritechnica, Lectura published its Used Equipment Report: Tractors. This contained information gathered from nearly 120,000 used tractor sales in all countries across Europe during a five-year period from 2010 to 2014. Key information was generated on which machines sells best in which countries; which areas demand high- or low-horsepower models; and what brands are most popular on wholesale markets.

Lectura has now launched an online system to evaluate used machinery prices. The company's Used Machinery Evaluation Software is now the primary reference for many dealers when it comes to online used machine assessment. The resource includes reliable, market-related information on machines including tractors, combines, forage harvesters, loaders and telescopic handlers. It provides an overview of manufacturers, machine types, models, technical data and list prices, and has the option of adding information on the condition of specific machines, their operating hours and any special equipment fitted so that they can be individually appraised.

The Information Centre for the Used Machinery Trade at Agritechnica 2017, which takes place at Hanover's exhibition grounds from the 12 to 18 November (with special preview days on 12 and 13 November), will be of interest to anyone involved in trading agricultural equipment, as well as providing an excellent opportunity for networking and making new contacts with trading partners from around the world.
