Background brief - Agriculture and Fisheries Council of 19 February 2018

The Council meeting will take place on Monday 19 February 2018 in Brussels starting at 10.00, and will address mainly agricultural matters. It be chaired by Mr Rumen Porodzanov, Bulgarian minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

After the adoption of A items, the Council will have an exchange of views on the Commission communication on "The Future of Food and Farming". They will focus in particular on direct support, environmental aspects and rural development. The debate will be held in public session and therefore live streamed.

During an informal lunch, ministers will then have the opportunity to discuss the theme 'CAP: strategic choices'

The afternoon session will be dedicated to important subjects such as the role of agriculture in the revision of the EU bioeconomy strategy and the EU protein plan, due to be released by the Commission in 2018.

Under any other business, ministers will also be informed about the statement of the Visegrád group about the CAP after 2020, the imminent launch of the task force for rural Africa and the issue of the contribution of the cohesion policy and other EU policies to rural development after 2020.

A press conference will be held at the end of the meeting (at around 18.10) with Commissioner Hogan.
