In 2017, we also developed our Sustainability Scan. This is a tool to assess sustainability gains of new products and services in the initial stage of development. Our new strategy for crop protection aims at prevention of the use of crop protection products and, if needed, using low-impact products. These examples demonstrate Agrifirm's ambition to collaborate both internally and with stakeholders to create a socially responsible food chain. This is the core of our new strategy Better Together, launched in 2017, which constitutes our CSR structure.
“The R of CSR stands for responsibility, which lies at the heart of our company”, says Dick Hordijk, CEO of Royal Agrifirm Group. “The ambition to be relevant in the food supply chain, implies full responsibility for healthy soils, the environment, animals and foremost people. To this, supply chain collaboration is vitally important. Therefore, Agrifirm actively engages in a dialogue with stakeholders like food-processors, retailers and ngo's. We aim for environmental and social positive impact, both locally on the farm, as regionally and even worldwide. We do this by sharing knowledge within our organisation, and by collaborating externally with all relevant stakeholders. This is what Better Together is all about.”
Four CSR and four operational pillars
Being knowledgeable about integrating plant and animal supply chains, Agrifirm is centrally positioned in the food supply chain. Based on this, we actively connect with chain partners and opinion leaders to further support a sustainable food chain. To be effective, we focus our CSR policy on four strategic pillars, supported by four operational pillars.
CSR pillars |
Operational pillars |
Responsible raw materials |
Business integrity |
Circular and resource efficient agriculture |
Food safety |
Healthy soils, plants and animals |
Efficient production and logisitics |
Socially responsible supply chains |
Employees: safety first |
“The four strategic CSR pillars concern themes that will get additional attention, like circular agriculture with mineral loops that are closed as much as possible, and responsible sourcing of raw materials”, says Ruud Tijssens, Director Public & Cooperative Affairs. “The four operational pillars concern themes in which we are already very active, but need better communication. On the four CSR themes we will actively engage in collaboration with our supply chain partners. This fully fits our strategy Better Together.”
