New rules to protect farmers in the food supply chain take effect

Agro Napló
New European rules that will ensure the protection of 100% of European farmers as well as small and medium-sized suppliers against unfair commercial practices in the food supply chain are now in force.

Published in the official newspaper last week, the new EU legislation covers agricultural products and foodstuffs marketed as part of the food supply chain.

For the first time, 16 unfair commercial practices imposed unilaterally by any trading partner (retailers, food processors, wholesalers, cooperatives, producer organizations, isolated producers) will be banned across the EU.

Member States will have to designate authorities responsible for applying the new rules. The designated authorities will have the power to impose fines and initiate investigations following complaints.

An explanatory brochure in French and English is available online, as well as a press release issued during the political agreement on the new rules.
