From Italy to Maharashtra: agricultural machinery for India

The EIMA Show of demonstration trials of Italian agricultural machinery and equipment at work is set for mid-May in the Pune district to bring together financial institutions, agricultural agencies and research institutes. Eleven manufacturers, most of them from the the Emilia Romagna Region, are presenting specific technologies for farming in Maharashtra, India's leading state for agriculture and industry.

The EIMA Show – Maharashtra India is coming up May 20th and 21st to showcase and stage demonstrations of agricultural machinery and equipment developed through an Italian-Indian partnership involving the Italian-Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Maharashtra Viticulture Association, the Emilia Romagna Region, and the Italian Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Federation, FederUnacoma, in cooperation with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, FICCI. The trials in the field, featuring machinery manufactured exclusively in Italy by eleven specialized enterprises, will be held in the Pune district in the Manjiri area on the experimental grounds of the Pune National Research Center for Grapes under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. The two days of field trials will move on to a third day of the Manjiri event, May 22nd, dedicated to business-to-business meetings of the manufacturers and local business people. Following the positive experiences in Punjab – another important farming region in the north of the country where agricultural mechanization demonstrations have been set up in recent years – these promotion activities are being shifted to the large central west state with great strategic importance due to the state's wealth and development. The organizers have explained that Maharashtra is one of India's most populous states with 112 million inhabitants, with more than 10% of them concentrated in the city of Mumbai. The state can vaunt consumption above the national average and an economy based on agriculture and industry. At present, farming accounts for 64% of the state's population living in rural areas cultivating vineyards (Maharashtra is India's major producer and exporter of table grapes), legumes, oil crops,  jowar (sorghum), bajra (pearl millet) and curcuma (tumeric) along with cotton and sugar cane producing raw materials for the strongly developed food and textile industries in the state. This means modern mechanization is essential for this region where agriculture is the main resource and must meet the growing requirements of consumers becoming more and more demanding as regards food quality and variety. Most of the Italian manufacturers taking part in these demonstration trials are located in the Emilia Romagna Region's industrial districts. They are: Annovi Reverberi (components), Braglia (components), Cima (sprayers, dusters and weed control), F.lli Annovi di Annovi Marino (vineyard fertilizer spreaders), Fieni Giovanni (fans for mist blowers), Martignani (mist blowers), Nobili (sprayers and mulchers), Selvatici (spading machines and post hole diggers), Sicma (spaders and shredders), Tifone (sprayers), Zanon (shears and vineyard and orchard equipment).

The Manjiri event in the Pune district is geared to strengthen Italian-Indian cooperation in the field of agricultural mechanization and technologies developed in recent years to lead up to the great biennial EIMA Agrimach review scheduled for the exhibition's fourth edition in New Delhi with a run from December 3rd to the 5th.
