Large-scale agriculture – for profit and society?

Agro Napló
The IAMO Forum 2018, "Large-scale agriculture – for profit and society?", will provide insights into the general conditions, perspectives and challenges of large-scale agriculture and will discuss the increasing importance of stakeholder interests.

The international conference, held mainly in English, takes place in Halle (Saale), Germany, from 27th to 29th June 2018. The IAMO Forum aims to provide the latest research findings, discussion platforms and exchange opportunities between agricultural practice and science.

The IAMO Forum will focus on the transition economies of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and East Asia, as well as the developed and emerging markets economies of Europe, America and Australia. With agricultural production in transition, even in developing and emerging countries, food production is increasingly occurring on very large farm sizes. These highly integrated industrial complexes, which often cultivate hundreds of thousands of hectares, are setting new standards in the agricultural sector and raising the interest of investors from outside agriculture.

The three-day conference program of the IAMO Forum 2018, which includes three plenary sessions, several parallel sessions and moderated panel discussions, will provide a platform for research that investigates the economic, entrepreneurial and social aspects of large-scale farming. At the same time, the institutional framework conditions that influence the emergence and success of these business models will be considered. On the third conference day, 29 June, representatives from international agribusiness will share their experiences with the audience and debate key issues with stakeholders from science, policy and civil society.

Both German and internationally recognized keynote speakers have been selected, including: Jörn Göbert, LFD Holding, Germany; Ruud Huirne, Rabobank, The Netherlands; Mila Kletsky, Picking Alpha, Belgium; Alex Lissitsa, IMC SA, Ukraine; Aurélio Pavinato, SLC Agrícola SA, Brazil; Eugenia Serova, FAO Liaison Office, Russian Federation; Philipp Schreck, University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany; Richard J. Sexton, University of California, USA; Oane Visser, Institute of Social Studies, The Netherlands; Anna Catharina Voges, Saat-Gut Plaussig Voges KG, Germany; and Taras Vysotskyi, Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB), Ukraine.

The IAMO Forum 2018 is organized by IAMO's Department of Structural Development of Farms and Rural Areas in cooperation with the DLG e.V. (German Agricultural Society); and the UCAB. It is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Leibniz ScienceCampus "Eastern Europe – Global Area" (EEGA).
