Following the publication of the Task Force for Rural Africa report - an agri-food and rural agenda for the new ‘Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs' -, an online consultation was launched by the European Commission to gather feedback on the report and its key recommendations.

Targeted at stakeholders involved in the development of African agriculture, agri-businesses and agro-industries, this consultation is based on the findings of the report and the short to medium term actions suggested by the Task Force. Gathering feedback on those will help in planning and implementing the future actions under the Africa-Europe alliance.

The outcome of this consultation will feed into the third African Union-European Union Agriculture Ministerial Conference taking place on 21 June 2019 in Rome. This is the first political opportunity for the EU and the AU to jointly debate the Task Force's recommendations and agree on the next steps to take for the agri-food and rural agenda within the Africa-Europe alliance.

The consultation is opened until 31 May 2019 at 23:00 CET.

Background

In April 2018, the European Commission set up the Task Force for Rural Africa, a group of experts requested to provide advice and recommendations to strengthen the AU-EU partnership in food and farming and enhance the role of the EU in the sustainable development of agriculture, agri-business and agro-industries in Africa.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in September 2018 announced a new Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs, aimed at creating up to 10 million jobs in the next five years. With the importance that the agriculture and food sector has in the economy of most African countries, this sector will have a key role to play in the alliance.

The Task Force for Rural Africa report, including some key recommendations for short and medium term actions, was published on 7 March 2019. This report acts as the agri-food and rural agenda of the alliance.
