The morning Workshop, Vineyard Planting, will be opened by Professor Rosaio Di Lorenzo, University of Palermo, who will introduce the needs for innovation, the crucial choices and the recent technical solutions put forward by research.
New materials for planting will be presented (root cuttings and M series rootstocks) by Antonio Pisciotta, University of Palermo, and Lucio Brancadoro, University of Milan. In particular, Professor Pietro Catania, University of Palermo, will be presenting the state of the art of planting technology with the use of geo-referenced equipment and Aldo Calcante, University of Milan, will be speaking about technologies for the precision automatic transplant of rooted cuttings. There will also be interesting experiences from the wineries, like that of Massimiliano Biagi, agronomic manager of the Barone Ricasoli group. He will be showing photographic documentation on new plantings on the sloping terrains of the group's companies. Enzo Corazzina and Luigi Bonato, both consultants in different areas of Italy, will then be presenting the strategic and economic choices to be taken into consideration at the time of planting (irrigation, planting distances and growing methods, varietals, clones and rootstocks) and the new technological trends for vineyard planting.
In the afternoon, the Workshop on the Management of Health Conditions, will begin with an introduction by Piero Attilio Bianco, followed by François Delmotte, director of the Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin - INRA Bordeaux (France who will be analysing the research prospects on the induction of resistance and tolerance factors of the vines to the major pathogen agents that affect the vines. Ilaria Pertot, Edmund Mach Foundation, will be addressing the development of the application in Trentino Alto Adige of control models for diseases and parasites and tools for decision-making experimented in this large and complex district with hilly and mountainous areas. Four well-known research projects that are updated and improved every year will be presented during the workshop. These projects address the issues of efficiency of defence and models for forecasting the spreading of diseases based on climatic, environmental and cultivation data. The speakers will be Silvia Toffolatti, University of Milan, Tito Caffi, University of Piacenza, Fabio Mencarelli, University of Tuscia, and Roberto Oberti, University of Milan. Finally, Giovanni Bigot, consultant for the company Perleluve, will conclude with the experiences in Friuli of processing and interpreting the data collected using a smartphone application.
The Innovation Workshop will be from 3 November to 5 November with sessions on other key aspects of vine growing.
